Using an old book you found on your shelf or at the thrift store, join me and learn how to make a new book that can be used for journaling or painting. We’ll remove the book block or “guts” of the book from the cover and spine. We will sew new pages into it using a Cosmic Star binding developed by Diana Mahar. The beauty of this stitch is that it, like the more difficult coptic binding, allows pages of the book to lay flat. The Cosmic Star binding works for three or six signatures of paper which can be drawing, mix-media, watercolor or a combination of papers. The supplies needed for this class are: 1. Book that will be used for the cover of your new book. If you don’t like the look of the cover, you can glue book cloth that you make to the outside of the cover and glue paper or cloth to the inside cover as well. (The blue cover book in photo). In that case you will need to bring fabric for the cover and paper backed fusible web like Wonder-Under by Pellon. 2. Paper for the pages in your book. The amount of paper you will need depends on how thick the spine of your found book is as well as the thickness of your paper. For example, the blue book spine is 1-1/2” wide. The instructor created six signatures of six sheets each of thin drawing paper, or 36 sheets of paper, folded in half. Helpful to have but instructor can share hers 3. Craft knife 4. Waxed thread 5. Awl 6. Sewing needle
