Service Description
Mondays, June 3 & 10, 2024 1 to 4 pm Suggested donation $30 plus a $5 materials fee Claudia Fuller will teach Coptic Binding again this month. This bookbinding method was developed in Egypt in the 2nd century AD. The binding is a good one as the pages lay flat, allowing you to write, sketch, paint or scrapbook on a flat surface. Books can be made with any type of paper, sketch, journaling, or watercolor. These make wonderful personal journals and memorable gifts. You do not need to have any experience with book making to learn this artful technique but be advised the stitch can take a bit to master and can be frustrating. Claudia teaches with a clarity and enthusiasm that makes learning new skills very easy. Due to the process required, this class will take place in two 3-hour sessions. In the first class we will make book pages and cover our covers with the decorative paper. In the second class we will sew our books. Supply List Covers: Heavy cardboard like from the back of a sketchpad - NOT corrugated card board. You will need two the same size for book cover. Or you can use a used book the size you want for your book. The covers from the used book will be used for your new book. Decorative paper: Two sheets of paper that measure the size of your book cover, plus extra inches. For example, the sample book has covers that are 6 x 8”. The decorative paper is 8 x 10. You will also need two sheets of similar or contrasting decorative paper for the insides of your covers - those sheets should be the size or slightly smaller than your covers. Paper: Sketchbook, mixed media or watercolor paper - 2 large sheets, 30” x 22”. You’ll be tearing down and then folding the resulting sheets in half to create your pages. Several pages, nestled together become your signatures. The sample book took two 22 x 30” sheets of 180 lb watercolor paper with signatures comprised of two sheets and a total of 8 signatures. This book opens in a landscape style and utilized both sheets of paper with no waste. Waxed thread, an awl, book sewing needle. Instructor has a large supply of thread she’ll bring with her for you to use. You may also use her tools, i.e. needles, awl, book cradle. Claudia Fuller is a mixed media artist who has always enjoyed creating artful items. Ten years ago, she made her first book and hasn’t stopped since. She makes books for gifts and she makes books to fill with her art making. She uses watercolor papers, book board and book cloth for some jou
